I am a HUGE Horror fan, so when I stumbled upon this book, I was intrigued. Well I can now say it is a very fun read, and I read the whole book in one sitting. The book thoroughly goes every possible monster from every possible, showing tactics to overthrow and conquer the beasts and rewards that one may reap from it. All in All a fun read.

In the way of (humorous) survivalist handbooks, this one falls pretty flat. This hardbound gothic looking book presents a variety of monsters for which you could... well... umm.. hunt. The book is broken into two sections, Cryptozoology (legendary creatures) and Cryptohoplology (legendary weapons & armor). The author presents a listing of monsters with a description, killing method, weaknesses, strengths, possible souvenirs, and minor literary references. Unfortunately, theres a lot of repetitiveness between the description and killing method for each entry. There seems to be pretty much three killing methods: melee combat, ranged combat, and imolation through fire. Its pretty much the same in every listing. The weapons section is a little better and the author is well researched enough in mythologies.

Listing of included creatures:
Basilisk Centaur Chimera Cyclops Djinn
Dragon Fairy Ghoul Golem Gorgon
Griffin Harpy Hellhound Hydra Kraken
Manticore Merman Minotaur Mummy Pegasus
Roc Sasquatch Scorpionman Siren Sphinx
Troll Vampire Wendigo Werewolf Zombie

Amongst the weaponry & armor are Excalibur, Mjolnir, Achilles Armor, Kusanagi, Blue Blade, and others.

The book had potential, maybe some humor would have helped but ,for me, it fell flat. The cover looks great, its very quick reading, and from the mythology side it is interesting if brief.
Pretty cool book

Its a pretty cool book that explains how to find and kill the most dangerous monsters. It also has a section about weapons (cryptotophology).

BIG BIRD! - MODERN SIGHTINGS OF FLYING MONSTERS

    Product Description

A LEGEND ON LEATHER WINGS! The Indians called it the Thunderbird, a winged monster so vast that the beating of its mighty pinions sounded like thunder. But this ancient beast is not to be held in the cage of mythology. Today, from all over the dusty U.S. / Mexican border come hair-raising stories of modern day encounters with winged monsters of immense size and terrifying appearance. Further field sightings of similar creatures are recorded from all around the globe. The Kongamato of Africa, the Ropen of New Guinea and many others. What lies behind these weird tales? Ken Gerhard is in pole position to find out. A native Texan, he lives in the homeland of the monster some call Big Bird. Cryptozoologist, author, adventurer, and gothic musician Ken is a larger than life character as amazing as the Big Bird itself. Kens scholarly work is the first of its kind. The research and fieldwork involved are indeed impressive. On the track of the monster, Ken uncovers cases of animal mutilations, attacks on humans and mounting evidence of a stunning zoological discovery ignored by mainstream science. Something incredible awaits us on the broad desert horizon. Keep watching the skies!

I was disappointed when I took this book out of the Amazon.com mailer and saw how thin it was, but when I started reading it I realized it was PACKED with interesting research and personally investigated accounts - NOT just a bunch of speculation as is too often the case with this type of book. Anyone interested in Forteana will enjoy this book and I am adding the author to my list of writers whose books I will look out for in the future.
A Must Read book but Ken Misses the point!
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :1
Written in an entertaining magazine style, so easy to read. Fascinating stuff but begs an important question that the author seems to miss completely. With so many eye witness accounts of Pterosaur type creatures surely the obvious implication is that they are not extinct. So the dominant idea that they disappeared 60 million years ago must be wrong. Yet Ken allows another writer (in Appendix 1) to re-affirm that very belief! Appendix 1 ends the book with four pages of pure evolutionary fairytale from a very fertile imagination telling us they vanished 65 million years ago! What a way to end a book filled with accounts of modern day sightings! Unbelievable.
Good, but could have been better...
Rating Point :2 Helpful Point :7
I just bought this book about two weeks ago and since its a light read I finished it in about three days.
It was a pretty informative book as these things go. Being mostly focused on the title creature "Big Bird" of Texas fame it didnt leave much room for the other mystery flying creatures of the world.
Though the author made an effort to include some of these other mystery flyers, it almost came as an afterthought.
Being from the area the author would obviously focus on his own backyard and I dont blame him, but more thought could have been put in the section on creatures from the other areas both in this country and in other countries.
Plus the fact that he included the "Mothman" in his living Pterosaurs theory, which is just insulting. Mothman has never been identified as a Pterosaur by any of the witnesses and this "fact" just seems to be pulled out from thin air, so to speak.
The Book also has many spelling and punctuation errors that could have been found had they had a decent editor.
In all, if youre from Texas or plan to travel there to do research, its a great book on local folklore, but if youre from anywhere else in the world it really has no impact on the Cryptozoological hunt for the mystery flying creatures of the rest of the world.
    Close to the edge
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :1
I enjoyed the book, I thought it was entertaining and informative on a subject considered taboo in most scientific circles, however it did not take me "to the edge" or the fringe if you will. The author mostly stayed clear of the most controversial aspects of flying humanoids, and mentioned some cases only in passing ie" flying human November 1975 Rio Grande area, and gave no details. He did not take the proverbial leap of faith and considedered the whole spectrum of the phenomena, the paranormal side, UFOs, etc. He kept it safe.
    A fascinating read!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
I was thoroughly intrigued by the authors account of sightings and other evidence of the existence of these fascinating creatures. A highly enjoyable reading experience!

Cryptozoology and the Investigation of Lesser-Known Mystery Animals

    Product Description

This anthology compiles chapters by several investigators, looking at mystery animals that are rarely mentioned in cryptozoological literature, or in some cases are brand new to cryptozoology. Some turn out to be hoaxes or misidentifications, some can not yet be distinctly discerned from a background of cultural folklore, but others may very well point to unrecognized species awaiting zoological discovery.

Chapters include subjects on luminous spiders, undescribed pigs, the possibility of new coelacanths, "flying snakes," a Pacific Island mystery bird, freshwater cephalopods, bipedal reptile sightings, a Kentucky water cryptid, New Mexico folkloric animals, and classic newspaper reports from around the world.

Chapter contributors include Matthew A. Bille, Gary Mangiacopra, Dwight G. Smith, Barton M. Nunnelly, Jerry A. Padilla, Michel Raynal, Nick Sucik, and Chad Arment.

This Book is a hodgepodge. It ranges form well detailed discussions of pig crypties and strange possible birds to random newspaper articles that are analyzed as to whether they are valid or not. The author indicated that his purpose is to bring to light some lesser known criptids. It leaves me wanting a bit more, but it was worth reading if only to add to my other books on the subject. If you want some neat factoid to think about buy the book if you are looking for deep science look else where.

Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :23
Anchor Bay Entertainment has begun releasing the lesser-known Hammer films in an economical two-fer format, following behind MGM and their Midnight Movies format. Thats great news for those of us who havent gotten around to purchasing these films individually, as they were originally offered, but bad news from those who have already bought the films when they were originally released to DVD in the single movie format at full price. The discs and special features offered though this set are the same as when they were offered in a single disc format, but now they are two for the price of one. I cant help but wonder if the original releases werent selling very well, so Anchor Bay recovered them and re-released them in this more economical limited edition sets. Who knows?

Anyway, the first film, The Four Sided Triangle (1953) is a decent melodramatic science fiction thriller dealing with, what I figure was a relatively new concept at the time, of human cloning. The story involves mainly three individuals, Bill, Robin, and Lena. Bill, coming from a solid background and a wealthy family, is the practical one, while Robin is the flipside of the coin, coming from a poor family, exhibits the dreamer-like qualities of a true visionary, but also suffers the highs and lows of what could be considered a manic-depressive personality. Lena is sort of in the middle, obviously desired by both men, although she can only choose one.

The men, fresh back from college, develop a machine that can perfectly reproduce anything, and this opens up a wealth of possible opportunities, and also allows Bill to profess his love to Lena, prompting their marriage, much to Robins dismay. Robin, bored with the practical applications of the machine already, looks towards new frontiers of duplicating organic matter, and decides one the process is perfected, he should like to duplicate Lena. It works, but not without complications. All in all, not a bad movie, and it seems pretty original for the time, even though it does borrow from the Frankenstein mythos a little bit. The film is slow moving, so patience is required. The surprise ending seemed a bit contrived and fantastical, but the production values were pretty good, making for an interesting, if drawn out, experience.

X - The Unknown (1957) is the much better of the two films here, presenting a very intelligent and wonderful science fiction story that presents the notion of an ancient life form that lives within the Earth and rises through a fissure, seeking out sustenance in the form of radioactive materials. Dean Jagger stars and presents a thoroughly likable character surrounded by a strong supporting cast. Some of the horror elements were quite a bit more visceral that I would have expected, but made for fun and interesting viewing leading up to a suitably climatic finish.

I really liked the notion that the creature, a giant blob of inky, gooey material, wasnt from outer space, but something that has been on this terrestrial plane for a long time, much longer than man. I also appreciated the complications that developed as the characters discerned information about the creature, providing real depth to the story, and elevating this film above the average creature feature.

Both films look and sound great, with minimal deterioration present in the prints provided, and contain the special features related to their original, independent releases, with The Four Sided Triangle disc containing a Hammer World of Horror episode titled The Curse of Frankenstein and X- The Unknown disc the World of Horror episode titled Sci-Fi and an original trailer for the film. Also included in the case are two reproduction cards for promotional material on each film. A great value if you are coming in late in the game, and it does say limited edition on the front of the case, so supplies may be limited.

I purchased this with just reviews and a general understanding of the movies. I was pleasantly suprised. Four Sided Triangle is an interesting story on cloning and the obligitory warnings of playing God. Pretty good acting and original story. Not a lot for true "horror" but a good sci fi movie none the less. Special effects were interesting and relates to what was seen in the original "The Fly". As for X The Unknown you will be reminded of "The Blob" although you need to remember that X came out a year previous. The idea is releatively the same. A bunch of goo terrorizes a local area. Although The Blob has been shredded by some, I think it is still a good movie. X rates up there as well. It is in black and white which true "old" movie fans will appreciate. The acting is solid and the story is interesting and will keep your attention. A worth while twosome to add to your collection.

Icons of Horror Collection - Sam Katzman (The Giant Claw / Creature with the Atom Brain / Zombies of Mora Tau / The Werewolf)

    Amazon.com

The four Sam Katzman films included in his Icons of Horror Collection stand as testaments to the American atomic age, reflecting public terror and awe towards 1950s technology and the accomplishments made in science and medicine. Sam Katzman, an incredibly prolific B-movie producer whose expertise in horror and sci-fi resulted in collaborations with Ray Harryhausen (Jason and The Argonauts), originally masterminded several wonderful thrillers, classic archetypal examples for later films on similar topics. In this DVD set, two of the four films are painfully slow paced, but contain horror scenes that vibrantly combine horror, sci-fi and film noir. Zombies of Mora Tau (1957) catalogues a researching teams attempts to confiscate a diamond stash lodged on an abandoned ship in a harbor guarded by the living dead. Some foggy shots of zombified sailors, eternally guarding the gems as a curse for stealing them, provide chills if even for a few moments. The Giant Claw (1957) introduces the viewer to the age of alien invasions and military paranoia. Opening with a great shot of an Earth diorama orbiting in space, the film chronicles Mitchell MacAfee (Jeff Morrow), an electronics engineer who reports from his aircraft shadows of a large bird dive-bombing his plane. Sally Caldwell (Mara Corday) stands by at home base, continually ready for action. When one does manage to see this elusive shadow, the viewer can almost make out the giant avian claw that looks like a chicken foot. The two films that really make the collection are Creature with the Atom Brain (1955) and The Werewolf (1956), which reinvent the Frankenstein story to chronicle humans-turned-monster in the name of science. In Creature, Dr. Steigg (Gregory Gaye) has reanimated dead men with atomic energy by injecting their brains with radioactive material that exponentially increases their strength to kill normal humans. Great sequences show Dr. Chet Walker (Richard Denning), the heroic scientist hired by police, using a Geiger counter at crime scenes. Live-dead men with stitched up heads wandering stiffly around as a monster mafia, giving hearty doses of humor to this fantastic film. Likewise, The Werewolf features awesome footage of star, Duncan Marsh (Steven Ritch), turning into a wolf while managing to keep his well-tailored suit clean as he runs through the forest. During most of the film, Marsh is fleeing a well-intentioned Sheriff Haines (Don Megowan), and two villains, Dr. Emery Forrest (S. John Launer) and Dr. Morgan Chambers (George Lynn), who accidentally turn him into a wolf when experimenting with radioactive injections that would protect humans from radiation. All four films have the look and feel of the epic Universal movies like The Wolf Man, and The Mummy, and give historical context to buffs researching 1950s monster films. Trinie Dalton

Had never heard of Sam Katzman before Amazon recommended this 4 movie DVD set. Glad they did. These are 4 great B-Movies. The Giant Claw is similar to other B movies such as some of the Japanese cheese like Gamera etc. Creature With The Atomic Brain is similar to the 1960 sci-fi movies like Not Of This Earth,Brain From Planet Arous anyhow you get the idea. Zombies Of Mora Tau about modern day Diamond Hunters in the South Pacific trying to recover diamonds from a long ago ship wreck garded by Zombies both on land and sea to keep treasure hunters from cashing in on the diamond loot. I really liked this movie. Finally The Werewolf was a nice change from the usually Lon Chaney/JR format. Set in more modern time near Big Bear Lake in California. Over all a very good collection on 2 dvds. Highly recommended.
Simple pleasures from a bygone era...and they look BRAND NEW!!!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :3
I absolutely love this set. Though I must admit the name Sam Katzman was largely unfamiliar to me, I had previously purchased Sonys "Icons of Horror--Boris Karloff" collection, and was thrilled with that. This set did not disappoint, as I had indeed seen all of these films many times on TV in my youth, and watching them again now has been like welcoming old friends into my home.

The most amazing thing about this set is the quality of the film transfers to DVD--pristine and magnificent, these movies have never looked so good! As an example, I was watching "The Werewolf" last night and just could not BELIEVE the picture quality--I was floored, it literally looks brand new! The prints of these movies shown on TV in the past have been downright murky--"Zombies of Mora Tau," in particular, always looked so foggy/hazy/grainy it was actually difficult to tell what was going on! No longer--these prints are clear as a bell--and its like seeing them with a new set of eyes!

Sony, PLEASE keep up the good work, these "Icons of Horror" (and now "Icons of Adventure" -- equally awesome!) collections are really among the industry standards relating to transfer quality of older low-budget films which normally would have been overlooked--very impressive. I see that the next "Icons of Horror" will be released in October (2008), and will include Hammer films such as one of my all-time favorites, "The Gorgon." A wonderful way to celebrate Halloween this year!

This collection is actually very good. I bought it for The Giant Claw. The Werewolf is one of the best werewolf films Ive seen. As silly as the model of the bird is in the Giant Claw, the film is actually quite good. Well written, directed and acted. If you can just get past the bird and stop laughing long enough, I think you may enjoy this film.

Though perhaps not as iconic as their Dracula and Frankenstein pictures, this quartet of fright flicks from Englands Hammer Films deliver enough Saturday afternoon creature feature thrills to please devotees of the legendary studios output and vintage horror fans alike. 1964s The Gorgon will be the title to attract the most immediate attention due to the presence of Hammers biggest stars, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, in its cast, and its most celebrated director, Terence Fisher, behind the camera. Its an atmospheric and offbeat entry in the Hammer canon, with one of its most unusual villains: a snake-haired fiend from Greek mythology who turns men into stone. Cushing and Lee are typically fine (both are on the side of the angels for once), and the pictures sole stumbling block is the lackluster makeup for its monster. Lee is also present in supporting roles in two other films in the collection: Scream of Fear (1961), one of several competent psychological suspense features made by Hammer in the wake of Psycho, with Susan Strasberg as a fragile young woman plagued by terrible visions and a house full of suspicious types and Fishers The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960), a revamp of the Stevenson story with Paul Massie as the dour scientist whose personality experiments unleash a virile but unhinged alter ego. Hardcore Hammer aficionados will be thrilled to discover that the DVD version is uncut and preserves much of the (mildly) salacious material trimmed for its release in America under the title House of Fright. The final film on Icons of Horror is Curse of the Mummys Tomb, with Hammer exec Michael Carreras (son of company founder James Carreras) behind the camera for a featherweight monster romp that doesnt hold a candle to Terence Fishers Mummy in 1959. Unlike previous Icons of Horror DVDs, the supplemental features here are slim--just the theatrical trailers for each film--though they do offer their own degree of charm, especially the ballyhoo-heavy tone of Mummy and the oddly elegant and unnerving preview for Scream of Fear, which is centered solely around an image of Strasbergs face. --Paul Gaita

Icons of Horror shows the best and worst excesses of the Hammer studios. The Curse of the Mummys Tomb while a little confusing is a very well done piece and The Gorgon is worth the value of the whole set in and of itself. However, The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll is a very poor and overly drawn out retelling of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, even though it was interesting to see them make Jekyll the uglier of the two and Hyde the suave and handsome member of the pair, placing all of Hydes ugliness on his inside. Scream of Fear is far too confusing and boring to comment on. All in all a good set if only for the Gorgon.
    Classic Hammer Horror Collection!

Curse of the Mummys Tomb & The Gorgon are
two all time classic monster movies ever
made! Curse is the best Mummy movie period.
Both movies are well written & acted with
great settings & atmosphere. The Mummy has
some humor thrown but is very much horror
but well done. The Gorgon is just awesome
with its Universal style story & settings.
Peter Cushing is great as the doctor of the
village & Christopher Lee shows up for a
small but effective role. The ending is
one of the greatest of Hammer movies like
Horror of Dracula. Scream of Fear is a very
well made gothic type movie with twist &
turns to keep you on the edge of your seat.
The ending is very well done. Jeckyl & Hide
remake again with Lee is very well done and
acted but not my favorite. Its worth a look.
This is one of the best Hammer collections &
worth the price of admission to your collection.

The following aspects are enough to highly recommend anyone interested in horror movies from the sixties to get a copy of this compilation: (1) three of the titles included in this package have been previously unavailable in DVD (scream of fear, the gorgon, the two faces of Dr. Jekyll) I am aware of Spanish and British DVD previous releases of "the curse of the mummys tomb (2) restoration and digital transfer is excellent in all 4 movies included (3) you get Christopher Lee playing roles in "scream of fear", "the gorgon", and "the two faces of Dr. Jekyll" (4) you get Peter Cushing confronting C. Lee in "the gorgon".

While "the curse of the mummys tomb", "the gorgon", and "the two faces of Dr. Jekyll" highlight the classical monster flicks from Hammer, "scream of fear" is a little gem that departs from this pattern. This less known movie is a black & white, well acted, scripted and storied mystery and suspense movie that will keep you in your seat despite the characteristic low pace of movies from this time. So, getting "scream of fear" in this package is probably another good reason to get a copy the whole thing. English subtitles are provided for all 4 features. Enjoy.

    Rodan/War of the Gargantuas

    Description

RODAN: Rodan, originally released in Japan in 1956 involves a giant monster being awoken from an ancient hibernation by human beings. In Rodan, miners digging far into the earth stumble across a clutch of giant, prehistoric insects which viciously attack several of the miners and prompt a government investigation into the matter. The giant bugs turn out to be little more than food for two gigantic flying beasts called Rodans, who hatch from giant eggs and proceed to terrorize the entire world. WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS: War of the Gargantuas, released in Japan in 1966 as "Frankensteins Monsters: Sanda versus Gaira" and a semi-sequel to Frankenstein Conquers The World. It introduces two giant, hairy humanoids called Gargantuas, which spawned from the discarded cells of Frankensteins Monster from the previous film and are described as brothers. The Green Gargantua is violent and savage, preying upon human beings as he lives in sea water, he is given the name Gaira for "stranger." The Brown Gargantua had been raised in captivity, and is docile and gentle because he resides in the Japan Alps, he is called Sanda for "mountain". The film follows the investigation and military engagements of these creatures until their climatic confrontation in Tokyo.

    Customer ReviewsA Great Package
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
Chances are, if youre reading this, youre already a fan of Japanese sf/monster films, so Ill cut to the essentials.
This is a wonderful package, the kind many of us have learned to expect from Classic Media, including the attractive paperboard case for this two disc set. You are really getting 4 films, not counting the featurette on special effects. You get the two versions of each primary film, Rodan in English (with an annoying narrator who I thought unnecessary and irritating) and Japanese with subtitles (and without the added-for-American-audiences narrator), and the same treatment for War of the Gargantuas. As another reviewer commented, Rodan, the giant pterodactyl, never looked better than in this first appearance, who would be teamed up with Godzilla in later films. The second disk contains the venerable slugfest, War of the Gargantuas, both in its English version (where we hear a rather subdued Russ Tamblyn deliver lines in his own voice, sounding a little wry, particularly when he offers a sarcastic line) and again the Japanese version, longer and more explanatory in relating the film as a sort of sequel to the earlier Frankenstein Conquers the World.
So there you have it, two complete versions of each primary film in DVD and a special featurette in an attractive case. What could be reasonably better?

Rodan was awesome...and just watched War of the Gargantuas for the first time since I was a kid sleeping over at my cousins house when I was 10 years old. This movie awakened great memories for me. In fact we would go out play War of the Gargantuas in the backyard many times after we saw this movie as kids. While I didnt go out and turn cars over and knock down buildings after my most recent viewing, the film was as great as ever.
I watched the film on a portable dvd player and the transfer by Classic Media was super with brilliant color and great film making. The classic ending and long duel between the brown and green Gargantua was a great ending that really didnt end after all. The Brown giant takes a royal beating in this film but the green giant gets his due from the Japanese military in the form of some electrifying moments..heh heh...
Enjoy this Toho classic from the 60s!!! Its a great add to your collection of classic monster films. I watched the Japanese version of the movie and enjoyed every second. The subtitles do not take away from Ichiro Hondas greatness!!!!!

Double your Kaiju ! Classic Japanese monsters rule !
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
This is a great double DVD set with both Rodan & War of the Gargantuas..
First about War - is a sequel to Frankenstein Conquers the World. I have watched this movie for over 30 years. This one has Russ Tamblyn & famous Godzilla actors Kenji Sahara,Jun Tazaki,Kumi Mizuno (they are in quite a few Godzilla movies)The Brown Gargantua vs the Green Gargantua (Green is the evil one) Yes they are men in monster suits but the effects, models are all really good, the movie is fast paced, entertaining, good music score. These movies made lots of money in the Tokyo box office. Thoroughly enjoyable - I would recommend this to anyone curious about giant monster movies that like Godzilla, this is made by and acted by the same crew.
Rodan (aka Radon in Japan)- 2 flying giant monsters terrorize Japan in the first Kaiju movie in color. The effects were decent (too many strings in some scenes) - it starts out with big bugs eating miners, who discover an egg and out comes Rodan who eats the bugs (they are tiny to Rodan) soon the 2 Rodans are flying everywhere.
These 2 movies have something in common - a volcano does them all in...
The DVD from classic media - if you are someone who likes English dubbed language - then it is as good as it will get on DVD, clean widescreen transfer on War. Rodan got lesser treatment as it is the same old VHS print used. English subtitles as well for those who want to see it for the original Japanese version. My DVD worked fine with subs. I think this is a must and great treat for fans of giant monster movies. Worth the price just for War alone ! :)

Anyone old enough to remember the 4:30 movie in the Tri-State area will remember Godzilla, King Kong, and these 2 movies. What a thrill it is to finally see these 2 movies not only in their original language, but also in their Original Aspect Ratio.

Hopefully the words wont get stuck in my throat, but I have been waiting a long time for these movies to be released on DVD. Thank you Classic Media for all the titles you have released. If you grew up watching Monster Week on the 4:30 movie, or the King Kong and Godzilla movies on Thanksgiving Day, and the Friday after, you must pick up this DVD set.

Eleven-year old slave Sally Henderson is faced with difficult choices as she and her family make a run for it, from Southern slavery into the Florida swamp. If they can make it to Seminole territory, her family may stand a better chance of remaining free. The story is very accessible to young readers, without shying away from some of the harsher realities of plantation life. Unfortunately, her mother does not survive an attack by alligators, but the remainder of her family manages to make it to relative safety. The Seminoles give Sally the name, "Little Song" for her habit of singing to herself to calm her nerves. While settling in to her new life, Sally must learn how to enjoy life again, even though her harrowing experiences will always stay with her. A unique perspective and a worthwhile read.

Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :3
Kevin is a young boy, Korean-American, who is just following his normal routine of doing his homework--his boring, irrelevant history homework--when history comes to visit him in a quite unlikely way. His baseball hat is quite literally lifted off his head by an arrow of a strange visitor who insists that he just fell off a tigers back. Unsure whether to call 911 or assume its a bizarre dream, Kevin goes along with the odd mans requests. As he begins to explain modern life--glass windows break when you try to shoot arrows through them--he determines that the only way to make his life return to normal is to figure out WHO this guy is and WHY hes suddenly in his room. This leads him to do research both online and in person.

The quest is to find a way to send him back to his proper time. The solution--critical thinking skills, communication, math, and cultural research.

While ARCHERS QUEST is not my favorite Linda Sue Park novel. I think this modern-fantasy tale may prove interesting to some young readers.

Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :7
I just cannot for the life of me figure out what to do with Linda Sue Park. Some authors write books that are spot-on gold all the time. Others cant churn out a decent title no matter how hard they try. Then theres Linda Sue Park. Garnering a coveted Newbery award early in her career, Park has had the unenviable job of showing the world that she remains worthy of that honor with every subsequent book she writes. I liked "A Single Shard", but somewhere in the back of my brain was the niggling suspicion that since Im twenty-seven-years-old my response probably would have been different had I been a ten-year-old who had to read it in school. Ditto my response to "The Mulberry Project", in which silkworms, rather than pottery, were the name of the game. As if hearing my silent plea, Park has now come out with the far more kid friendly (but still darned informative) "Archers Quest". The set-up is good, the story interesting, and the book a short sweet ride. Youd think Id be in seventh heaven. Instead, Im torn. On the one hand, its difficult to criticize an author who takes as much time and attention as Ms. Park does with her work. On the other hand, something about "Archers Quest" failed to grab me right from the get-go. Maybe its the fact that Park has written a story found in so many other childrens books. Maybe its the low-key action. Whatever the case, "Archers Quest" makes for a mighty fine read. It just didnt have that extra little oomph it needed to make it beloved.

You think your days been crummy? Youve got nothing on Kevin. Sure, today was a half-day at school, but is he able to appreciate it? Not a chance. The year is 1999 and Kevin is bored out of his skull with only a bouncy ball to keep him company. Next thing you know Kevins cap is hanging from an arrow sticking straight out of the wall. The arrow, in turn, belongs to a very oddly dressed man who is eyeing Kevin suspiciously and has his next arrow aimed at the boy in question. Turns out that the man is the great Korean historical figure Koh Chu-mong. Part Robin Hood part King Arthur, Chu-mong has somehow landed smack dab in Archies bedroom some 2,054 years into the future. Kevin, may be of Korean descent, but he doesnt sufficiently know his Korean history to know enough about Chu-mong (who requests that he be called Archer, shortened by Kevin to "Archie") to help him back to his own time. Together the two must discover everything they can about Korean history, magic, the Chinese Zodiac, and some basic math before the year of the Tiger is up. And the year ends that very night!

In a way, "Archers Quest" is a historical novel. Sure it takes place in 1999, but that still places it firmly in the past. Park starts with a particularly interesting situation. Youre in your bedroom, bored, and suddenly a hero from the past is looking to put an arrow in your heart. A great start, but a difficult one. Since the story must take place in the course of a single day, and since Kevin is such a realistic character that Parks afraid to ever put him into too much trouble, the storys action is downplayed. The most we get is an encounter with a real tiger, a race from a negligible enemy, and a run across a highway when the traffic has already been stopped. Her "villain" isnt even that villainous. Just misguided. Of course, limiting the action is Parks style. Therefore, if youve a kid who really got into "A Single Shard" or (more logically) "Project Mulberry", they are bound to enjoy this story just as much, if not more.

The concept of a historical or fictional figure bumming around the present isnt new, of course. Everything from "Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure" to "Inkheart" has used it to their advantage. Where Park diverges from the ordinary is in making her hero a Korean folk-hero. Kids whove never had the opportunity to learn of the adventures of Chu-mong will find much to learn about here. In this way, the book pairs nicely with another recent historical-man-to-whom-folk-tales-have-been-attached character, Dick Whittington, in Alan Armstrongs, "Whittington".

Ever attentive to supporting her stories with fact, Park includes a section on math in this story, while another attends to details involving Chu-mong, tigers, and RIT, and a bit on the zodiac. A Chinese Zodiac is located at the end of the book, and here I had a real problem with the book. Some childrens books that discuss the Zodiac do what "Archers Quest" did here and include each year with the dates ascribed to that year. For example, "The Roosters Antlers: A Story of the Chinese Zodiac" by Eric A. Kimmel, includes a bunch of dates that fall within different animal years. The book is useful because these dates go a decade or two into the future. "Archers Quest" on the other hand, stops at February 4, 2000. Thats all well and good if the kiddies want to know what animal is ascribed to the year of their birth, but does absolutely no good if they want to know what the current year in the zodiac is. Obviously it stops around 1999 because thats when the story takes place. However, it would be heads and tales more interesting if it bothered to go a little bit into the future. Even if it were just a decade.

None of this is to say that the book doesnt make for a good read. Linda Sue Park is first and foremost a premier childrens book author and dont let anyone tell you otherwise. I just wish that this book had gotten a little more work done on it. It reads beautifully and will give a lot of enjoyment to some kids with the whole time-travel aspect. For others it will start out well, then peter off into the dull. A nice title but not my favorite Park accomplishment.
    Good Enough
