In this 49 minute presentation, we get some bigfoot researchers that discuss various aspects of the phenomenon ranging from prints and sightings to habitat and feasability of the creatures existance. These researchers also talk about their continuing struggles to understand something for which they are largely mocked for studying. Among the interview subjects are John Green, John Bindernagel, Thomas Steenbergen, Robert Pyle, and Richard Noll. New faces to me were Bill Miller, Christina Walls, and Mel Skahan. Also included is the almost mandatory brief discussion and viewing of the Patterson-Gimlin film. Its a strong documentary that focuses more on the researchers and their studies. Biggest downfall is that it is so short. Otherwise, I recommend it for your bigfoot collection.

This is an excellent documentary, probably the best since Sasquatch Odyssey, which follows several researchers on their quest to find irrefutable proof of the existence of Hairy Bipeds. Researchers and scientists such as John Green, John Kirk, Bill Miller (who tells of his own experience in northern Minnesota in 1980), Mel Skahan (who also tells of an experience he and a research partner had, and also of his own sighting), Dr. John Bindernagel, Richard Noll, Thomas Steenburg, Robert Pyle and Christine Walls are all interviewed, giving their personal takes on Bigfoot and the research they do into it. Steenburg and Miller are shown in the field searching for evidence in a 6-wheel all-terrain vehicle in the Canadian wilderness. Bindernagel is interviewed about tracks and biological implications of the Sasquatch as well. Lee Moller of the British Columbia Skeptical Society also gives his assessments and finds the evidence lacking, in his view. There is also the prerequisite showing of the Patterson/Gimlin Movie, which Miller, Bindernagel, Pyle and Kirk assess and find to be real, whereas Moller seems to not be convinced by it. Pyle is given the bulk of the time at the end to give his final assessments on the subject. All in all, it is a very balanced documentary, and full of great information. I highly recommend it.

This book is about all the different crypto creatures that have been reported to have been seen at one time or another.

There is no scientific evidence offered, mostly stories.
The authorship is decent but in my opinion this book could have used more
illustrations and a more in depth look into the more populor creatures.

If you are looking for a quick review of crypto creatures and dont need all that indepth story telling then pick it up.

Its not a bad book by any means, it just reads like the author wanted to hurry up and get another one completed. I found myself only being able to read a few pages at a time before getting a little bored.

The best stories in this collection would be the Minnesota Ice man and the Jersey Devil.

I enjoy hearing the author- Loren Coleman, on The Coast To Coast A.M.
radio show. He is very passionate about his interests.

Not a collection of UFO/Bigfoot sightings & accounts, as suggested in its summaries.

Actually, a kind of travalogue, of allegedly paranormal sites.

The concept seems to be: "if youre on vacation, go visit Bigfoot!"

Problem is, most of the events in the book allegedly took place 20-30 years ago. Its more like: "go visit a place where Bigfoot may or may not have taken a dump years before your birth." And others are paved over. Or have a subdivision built on top of them (so sayth Google Maps). Go stare at a parking lot...great way to spend your vacation. NOT!

BTW-- I looked on Google Maps. One of the alleged paranormal event areas now has a fried chicken stand on it. Maybe the Colonel is part of a conspiracy.... :D

Ill confess I love reading purportedly true stories of cryptozoology and the paranormal, despite the fact I generally doubt the claims being set forth. Loren Coleman, the author of "Mysterious America," has a gift for presenting his case histories clearly and with a certain atmosphere that makes for entertaining reading, whether or not you give credence to his claims. The one thing you can believe without reservation is that "Mysterious America" is a fun book, sure to please those looking for a shiver and a taste of the mysterious.

When buying this book I was in the mind frame that this would be the ultimate guide to North American cryptid animals but upon finishing it found it a bit disappointing. While it is an entertaining book it is mostly just a compilation of strange stories and encounters. The book never goes deeply into any hard evidence something that for myself is very important. For example I would rather see a hard look at the Patterson/Gimlin sasquatch footage of 1967 than read about encounters people claim to have had with the creature. Also with 80% of the book devoted to cryptozoology I was surprised to see chapters on subjects such as "Springheel Jack" and "Phantom Clowns", they just didnt seem to fit into the general theme of the book and honestly I would have rather seen those chapters devoted to more cryptid animals instead. A couple positive things about the book is that it does touch on the possible origins of some of these creatures, though still not as much as I would have liked. It also has a great appendix section in the back with lists regarding various encounters around the country. Its certainly not a bad book, just not what I was looking for. If what I just described piques your interest by all means check it out. If youre looking for a deeper scientific look at the subject then move on to something else.

Its a lively, fun read a wide audience will find compelling.

I have had this book for a few years now and have pulled it out on many an occasion out of curiosity of places Ive been to or heard about.
It is written in an easy to read format and the general illustrations of the many beasts are helpful to picture what people have seen in the minds eye. The maps are also helpful if you visit these places so you can pinpoint the main areas of sightings.
The book could have been a little better if the author had included at least one photo or drawing of each creature from the witnesses, but otherwise it is an excellent book.
I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the mystery creatures that swim the deeps of this world!

Sea Serpents, Lake Monsters and Other Beasts from the Deep

From the authors of "The Field Guide to Bigfoot, Yeti and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide", this book tackles the various sea serpents, lake monsters and other aquatic cryptids in the same manner. Its not exactly an in-depth scientific survey, but it is a pretty good introduction to the phenomena, and it does try to cover a vast array of hypothetical species. We begin with a history of the sea serpent, going through important historical sightings, early studies of sea serpents, the discovery of the giant squid, and Heuvelmans attempted categorization. In these sections the book reads pretty much as a general history of Cryptozoology, so most readers will probably be familar with the material.

The real meat of the book comes in from the "species profiles", in which Coleman and Huyghes showcase the different cryptids they came up with in their system. Some come from Heuvelmans studies (with a new look at the "supper otter") while others are entirely new. Each write-up includes an illustration, maps, an overview of the creature and its habitats, range and behavior, and a few brief sightings. All in all, over a dozen species are covered. We are presented with the familar "classic sea serpent", the "water horse" (maned, long necked seals according to the authors), Heuvelmans "sea centipede" (a multi-finned whale), marine crocodiles and giant sharks, sea turtles and octopi. More exotic sea creatures mentioned included the Trinty Alps giant salamander, Mokole-Mbembe (a surviving dinosaur said to dwell in the Congo), the Buru (a possibly extinct monitor lizard from the Himalayas), surviving populations of Stellers sea cows, a giant beaver seen in Utahs Salt Lake and unidentified species of manta rays and whales.

Obviously some cryptids are more believable than others, but all are given a good amount of space, along with the authors attempts at finding a scientific explanation for them. In the back of the book, we are given some interesting material such as an essay about the latitudes in which lake monsters are found, some accounts about "globsters" and other unidentified carcasses that have washed ashore, and a list of locations around the world in which sea, lake and river monsters can be sighted. On small comment is that several of the creatures mentioned in this list arent mentioned at all in the text, but thats a small gripe.

Ultimately, this is a fun little book, especially for the lay reader who wants to know whether or not there is any possibility of discovering sea monsters in this day and age. Obviously some of the claims need to be taken with a grain of salt, but this book still provides a fun and interesting read. However, for the reader with a serious interest in cryptozoology, this book isnt going to replace Heuvelmans monumental "In the Wake of Sea Serpents". Its still worth including in your personal library, but its not the be-all, end-all word on marine cryptids.

Depending on what you mean by sea monsters Coleman and Huyghes Field Guide to Lake Monsters, Sea Serpents, and Other Mystery Denizens of the Deep is an adequate introduction into the realm of mysteries of the deep. Starting with the history of these beasts carrying on to modern times introducing the reader with monsters such as sea centipedes, marine crocodiles, giant sharks, sea turtles, octopi, giant beavers, monitors, dinosaurs, and salamanders. Certainly the Jurassic seas were filled with all kinds of marine reptiles that if they were alive today would fit the description of a sea serpent. However, these creatures seemed to have disappeared about the same time the dinosaurs met their end roughly 65 million years ago. More recently the zeuglodon, a primitive form of whale, might easily be mistaken for a sea serpent if it had been alive today, though it is a mammal, not a reptile.

In the 19th century an unscrupulous promoter actually cobbled together several zeuglodon skeletons and exhibited them as an extinct sea serpent. Zeuglodons are found in the fossil record as recently 37 million years ago. Can we find more recent fossil evidence for sea serpent-type creatures? It will be hard. The best place to find ancient sea creature fossils are in ancient sea beds. The geology of the planet changes so slowly that most of the more recent sea beds, where we would expect to find evidence for any sea serpent-like creature that has developed over the last few million years, are still at the bottom of the oceans and inaccessible to us. A lack of evidence is not proof of existence, of course, so what we have in Monsters Sea Serpents Other myst Denizens Deepare is simply tantalizing stories. Suggestive and intriguing, but until somebody comes up with a well-preserved body, there is no proof.

This is a fine book on underwater crytids. It is not straight narrative, but reads more like detailed scientific reports. Whether your interest is Nessie or giant squids, this ones for you. Excellent in all respects.

This book is a great introduction to the mesteries of the deep. Coleman gives the reader a good history of the Jurassic animals - sea turtles, marine crocodiles, sea centipedes, giant sharks, monitors, giant beavers, dinosaurs, salamanders. Etc.
Some of them lasted until present time. Now how about Lake Monsters and Sea Serpents? There is of course no proof of their existence, but they are certainly intriguing...
