Customer ReviewsGreat and fair assessment of the subject matter
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
This documentary, originally aired in 1994 on A&E, was very well-done and was very fair as to its assessments of the Bigfoot Mystery. Luminaries in the Bigfoot field such as the late Dr. Grover Krantz, Peter Byrne, Scott Herriott, Al Hodgson and Roderick Sprague are interviewed about their research and their opinions on the hunt for these elusive creatures. Byrne was running the Bigfoot Research Project at that time out of Parkdale, Oregon, and is shown in the field investigating a sighting. Dr. Krantz is shown in his lab at Washington State University with his footprint casts and his Gigantopithecus model based on the jawbone of the mystery primate. Herriotts video (along with Darryl Owens) are both shown, as is the Patterson/Gimlin Movie, with narration from Gimlin. Skeptical scientist John Crane is also interviewed about his opinions on the subject. This version is slightly different from the original, with Leonard Nimoy (In Search Of...) as the narrator, and some clips are edited a little differently, but overall it is the same one seen in 1994. It ends in Willow Creek, California during the Bigfoot Daze celebration with different townspeople giving their assessments of the reality of the creature, as well as the cultural influences Bigfoot has had through the years. I do recommend this documentary for anyones Cryptozoology collection.
The Best DVD on Bigfoot, if You Choose to Believe It
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
This DVD traces the beginning of Bigfoot in the late 1950s till the mid 1990s (but does not include the Freeman footage). I have to admit, it will make you think about what might be out there. I have had a hard time accepting this entire legend, but this DVD presents it in the best possible way. BOTH sides are looked at - why some think its a real thing, and others that thinks its a comical hoax. It does analyze the famous 1967 Patterson/Gimlin film of the "female" Bigfoot in northern CA, and does point out things I never noticed in it - making it almost seem real. It does show the Scott Herriott/Daryl Owen film of the Bigfoot looking them down at a mere 35 feet away, although its thru thick bushes (and is almost spooky).

If you do or do not believe in this, it is worth a look. My personal belief is that it is not real - how can almost 2000 of these things (according to the DVD) be alive and we only have a few shaky. blurry, far away videos and footprints of it - nothing more? You be the judge.
Bigfoot Fundamentals
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :1
This is a fun DVD to watch. There isnt a lot of new information in the piece, but the fundamentals of this mystery/legend are well represented. Decades after it was shot, I am still floored by the Patterson/Gimlin footage.
Compelling Evidence
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
This Ancient Mysteries investigation into the myth of Bigfoot,is truely
compelling. The best evidence that has been found to date, has been compiled into one video.
Narrated by Leonard Nimoy,A&E presents the most comprehensive investigation of Bigfoot ever produced. Utilizing an inovative, high-tech
approach, todays anthropologists offer a fresh perspective on hard evidence as presented through archival footage, computor analysis, and modern eyewitness video.
This video is aprox 50 minutes long and is impressive.
You will see Bigfoot through the eyes of ancient Indian myth, eyewitness accounts, photographs and plaster casts.

Well worth the few dallors that you will spend on this movie.
Great Production All Around!
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
When I give a rating of four stars, it means there is very little room for much better or improvement. (5 stars IMB is reserved for the very rare, best of the best). Dont let the price of this DVD for 50 minutes of Bigfoot stop you in this case. I love the narration with Leonard Nimoy in this version. The narration is the same word for word as the original TV released version. Only better IMO with LNs voice. You get top notch stories, history and examination of bigfoot extending over 125 years. This is a high quality production with great re-watchability. Feels like more than 50 minutes as you view this too. Just wish it would never end. Highly Recommended.

Keeping the Watch Bigfoot Researcher Documentary

    Product Description

This film is about the everyday people involved in Bigfoot Research. These are their words and stories, not mine. This film was produced to let the viewer decide about their work, not for me, the producer, to convince the viewer of their veracity. I think you will find it compelling.Lately, major media producers have been having a field day at the expense of the people involved in researching Bigfoot and other phenomenon. These producers seem to have an agenda to discredit these researchers. This trend plus a bad experience when I was invited as tech support with a well known Bigfoot Organization that (in my opinion) blatantly took advantage of the people who went on their "expedition" inspired me to produce this film. I will allow my viewers to make up their minds about these people, and the mystery of Bigfoot. There is nothing in this film but the pure essence of those who were interviewed. No agenda, no spin, no prompting, no trickery on my part...just the facts as these people see them. There is also NO hired skeptic waiting to discount these peoples opinions and make them appear foolish.I GUARANTEE you will be pleased with this offering. If you are not satisfied, I will refund your fees including shipping within 7 days.

Rating Point :1 Helpful Point :4
I purchased this DVD and was very disappointed in its play quality and content. The persons interviewed were self proclaimed experts who were unable to provide any substantial information and made the concept of Bigfoot seem as if it were only a hoax. I strongly do not recommned this DVD for purchase and as the titile of my review uindicates, it is "Poor at best".
    "Everyday Experts"
Rating Point :2 Helpful Point :1
This production presents six individuals that have an interest in the bigfoot phenomenon. Some had purported encounters, one of the guys is accused of hoaxing, and then theres Chandra. Ok this has nothing to do with proving bigfoot exists or not. What it is, is a roughly hour long documentary on investigators in the phenomenon. Its a look at the variety of everyday joes that have an interest in this. Its nothing special and the educated expert does nothing more than summarize Ivan Sandersons book on classifying unknown homonids. You get a former skunk-ape hunter, current skunk-ape hunter/hoaxer, granola girl, educated expert, a guy saying hes a paraphotographer(?!) "looks into the P/G film, and then pacifist Chandra who wants the bigfoots to study her not vice versa (shes a bit odd).

Overall, nothing to get excited about and it wouldnt hurt you to save your money on this. I found it relatively boring and largely uninspiring.

    A Good Socialogical Study
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :2
This is not a film about bigfoot/sasquatch. It is a film about bigfoot researchers, and their methods. This is not about what they have found, but an interesting sociological study about what motivates these people. The producer lets you make up your own mind. These are quite an interesting mix of people, from Dan Jackson who had a frightening face-to-face, to Carol Ann who is looking for evidence like a wildlife photographer. I played this to several friends to see what they think. Chanda came across as pretty freaky and scary, and almost all agreed that Carol Ann was the most interesting and level-headed. You dont have to agree with them, but you have to respect their ambition to study this.

Another person shown on here was David Shealy. David has been known as a hoaxer, but he came across as surprisingly candid. He didnt come across as a raving madman that some people have portrayed him, but talked about local issues like lack of access to areas they would go to at one time. He was surprisingly candid about his past. And as the dvd says, you can make up your own mind about him.

One type of bf researcher who was not portrayed was someone who is actively hunting for a bigfoot to shoot and kill one as proof to the world. I have heard that none of those types allowed to be interviewed. Those types are very paranoid and dont like outside attention.

But overall, take this as a study of people chasing after a dream and what motivates them.

Some good moments, but over all a lack luster production and effort compared to other Bigfoot videos to be seen and owned. If you are new to the subject and want a good jump start on bigfoot info, I would start elsewhere on higher rated videos. If you own it all already and this is your last bigfoot video, then by all means pick it up. Just OK. Not bad but certainly not great.

If it wasnt for the fact that the DVD is about Bigfoot, it wouldnt be worth the buy. The DVD has poor sound quality and effects that should make you laugh...not what I expected for the price. Dont expect anything from the title either... It sounded like a great Bigfoot DVD I could turn the lights off to and get creeped out! Not the case. On the upside, the DVD contains some great "first encounter" stories from folks who claim to have seen Bigfoot. If youre a true Bigfoot fan, take the plunge and buy it. Dont expect too much!

    Terrific truly independent documentary
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
This documentary, produced, written and directed by Autumn Williams ("Mysterious Encounters") is quite a great one. Autumn and her team, Kelly Berdahl and Jeff Johnston camp out in the wilderness of Oregon hoping to get some footage and maybe an encounter with what Autumn calls "our barefoot friends." After a few days and some mysterious knocking on sheet metal, Mike Nave and Jack Peters join Autumn and her team to help out with setting up equipment in different areas around camp. The latest technology is used, such as thermal imagers, game cams, audio recorders (which pick up the mysterious sheet-metal knocking), night-vision equipment and other forms of equipment. The Bauman incident written about by Teddy Roosevelt is reenacted excellently and witnesses are interviewed for their encounters. The extras include a funny blooper reel, Autumns lecture on the role of women in Bigfoot research at the 2005 Bellingham Sasquatch Conference and all the gear used in the documentary is described, along with links to the gear on the Internet. This is a terrific and well-balanced production, with a great professional feel to it. Two thumbs up, Autumn, and I look forward to volume 2.

Autumn has a confident and fresh way of bringing the "legend" into your home showing you that "he" is out there! Great job, Autumn! Cant wait for #2!
Movie slow but extra clips good
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :0
This video starts with the background behind the legend then deploys a group of people out in search of the legendary creature. The movie was slow and did not offer as much as the extra clips had. One of the clips shows a conference held somewhere where she talks about meeting a woman from northern california and has an encounter with several of them. Her perception on the subject made much logic.

I love this documentary. There is a nice mix of eyewitness acounts and a spooky month long stakeout for the big guy. Some humorus moments too. The night time vigils with rocks being tossed around and things in the darkness of the forrest making sounds would be so spooky! This is a well made and entertaining video. Lots of extra features too, which is unusual for DVDs of this genre. Recommended!!!

The original Pioneers/researchers of the bigfoot phenomena are featured. I love listing to their unique perspectives on the subject of Bigfoot. There are plenty of eyewitness accounts relived and a bit of comedy in the long journey over the years. For any new comers or seasoned Sasquatchers, I highly recommend this video. This DVD takes you from the early beginnings of the hunt in the Hemalayas in the 1950s, then the 1958 launch of bigfoot in the U.S. and the patterson film in 1967 to present day. This is a very good journey to take by all who maybe interested in the Bigfoot phenomena.

Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
A great documentary about the Grand Old Men of Bigfootery
I saw this documentary originally on video, presented as the original 70-minute documentary shown on television. This DVD, while it presents the original documentary, also has new segments, such as 3 short vignettes with Stan Winston (Aliens, Terminator 2) with him commenting that the Patterson/Gimlin film is most likely a brilliant hoax. Theres a new question-and-answer segment with Bigfoot researcher Richard Noll in which he discusses his thoughts on Bigfoot and the Bigfoot field in general. It also shows him in the field finding a set of tracks. There is also a photo gallery featuring the four principles of the documentary. This documentary features the story of the four Grand Old Men of Bigfootery, John Green, Rene Dahinden, Peter Byrne and Grover Krantz, featuring classic footage of each man, which tells the story of each mans quest to find the Sasquatch. Two of the men (Krantz and Dahinden) have passed on since the filming of this documentary, but of the four, only Green continues to be semi-active in the hunt. Byrne is semi-retired and laregly out of the public spotlight. This documentary is highly recommended for those who want to know more about the personalities in the field of Bigfoot research.

    The facts are in.
Bigfoot is not an ape but resides in the realm of the paranormal.
Weve cataloged every single living thing down to the size of a microbe in North America. How does an 800 lbs. ape escape for so long without being cataloged.Surely we catalog microbes in the farthest reaches of the forest. When Bigfoot dies does it bury itself? This creature has been seen on the edges of major cities but has never fallen off of a ravine, never been hit by a car and killed, never had a heart attack.....never......
So we dont find dead bears?
Then why do we have dead bear bones?
The association with UFOs,orbs, telepathy, poltergeist activity is overwhelming but ignored by the flesh and blood morons.Psssstttt...your out of time...wheres the beef?

Monster Spotters Guide to North America is an exciting field guide to more than one hundred mythical (or are they?) and folklore monsters reputed to roam the North American continent, from the Sasquatch of the Pacific Northwest to the hideous Mexican goatsucker called El Chupacabra. Penned with a witty edge by monster enthusiast Scott Francis, and illustrated with black-and-white sketches by artist Ben Patrick, Monster Spotters Guide to North America is sure to delight anyone with a keen interest in bizarre or even macabre beasts of legend. Quick-reference boxes for identification of key monster traits, a glossary of cryptozoology terms, a remedial course in common monster knowledge, case studies, and more fill this fantastic reference.

    Cryptozoology Field Guide
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
Much in the spirit of Loren Colemans various field guides to cryptozoology comes this, slightly more tongue in cheek, guide to North Americas resident monsters - bigfoot, ogopogo, chupacabras, the Jersey devil, mothman and so forth. Arranged by geography, this book covers all manner of iconic monsters and bogeymen from the United States, Canada and even Mexico, diving them into categories like lake/river/ocean monsters, reptilian humanoids and phantom animals. Wide and far ranging, this book draws upon sources as diverse as Native American mythology, the fearsome critters of lumberjack lore, UFO sightings and, of course, cryptozoology (that is, the search of as of yet unidentified animals such as bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster and such).

In spite of the cute, humorous tone the book takes, which I found charming actually, it IS a really good catalog of Amercian folklore. As I said before, it is arranged by region so you can easily find the various iconic legends from in and around your own neck of the woods. For example, the South includes things like the wampus cat, Hopkinsville goblins, Flatwoods monster and Carolina lizardman, the Midwest covers critters like the Enfield horror, Minnesota iceman, shunka warakin, Beast of Busco and hodag, and the part on the Canada mentions the mannegishi, waheela, wendigo and Thetis Lake monster, amongst many others. Further material includes a chapter on other American monsters (rods, black dogs, devil kangaroos, fresh water octopi and the like), information and terminology on cryptozoology, notes on vampires, werewolves and zombies, how to go monster hunting, famous monster carcasses, a short time line and a couple of cases studies. And, as an added bonus, at the end of the book is an official monster hunters map.

All in all, theres plenty of stuff here to entertain anyone from a young horror movie fan to a seasoned cryptozoologist, and everyone in between. Whether you take it out in the field on your search for, say, a skinwalker, the Lake Tahoe monster, thunderbird or New Englands Dover Demon, or just decide to stay home and read it from the comfort (and safety) of your armchair, youll find plenty of beasties that go bump in the night. Enjoy... at your own risk, mwahaha...
A Fun Guide For Monster Hunting
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
Reminiscent of "The Field Guide to North American Monsters" published several years ago, this fun little handbook is actually quite helpful and informative. Covers over one hundred mystery monsters from Canada to Mexico, including helpful drawings of many of them. Urban legends or real creatures, the reader is left to ponder for themself.
    Wonderful little Gem

This book is just wonderful. Im an RPGer and sometimes run horror games for my friends. Its so cool to have this handy little guide to help me inject more real world monsters into my games.
Not to mention how some of the entries really sparked my interest in these monsters.
I like books like this one and the Zombie Survival Guide that treat their subject matter as if it were real.
If you want a fun read or just fodder for campfire stories I highly recommend this one.
Must have for the Cryptid fan!
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
Any fan of cryptozoology will dig this reference guide. The entries are not very long, but this is a field guide and not an encyclopedia. What they lack in length, they make up for in quantity, pretty much everything is covered in here from your backyard bigfoot to lake monsters and even aliens.
I was thrilled to find one of my local cryptids mentioned in the book (the Gloucster serpent). And you may just be surprised and learn there may be a cryptid or two lurking in your neck of the country. Go out and explore!
Going to visit the family in another state? Look it up in the guide and see what you can keep an eye out for while youre there!

Very professional highly intellectual and scientifically sound writing. An excellent text for any scientific library collection.
When you decide you want to understand cryptozoology and cryptozoologists, this is the book for you...
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :2
Chad Arment, with Cryptozoology: Science & Speculation, has formalized the study of "cryptids" (defined as "an ethnoknown animal for which concrete evidence does not yet exist," p. 20). Arment really works to pull form and function together in studying cryptids, discussing the scientific method, the basis of proof, and other philosophical issues related to studying the "known but unknown" (my phrasing).

Here are a few of the gems in this book:

"All cryptids are folkloric. ...Cryptids are folkloric because they are ethnoknown - they occupy a place in an ethnozoological scheme even through they are still unverified by science" (p. 56).

"There are too many stretches of uninhabited or sparsely inhabited land for anyone to be adamant about the non-existence of large unknown species in North America" (p. 86).

"The overall process of cryptozoology is straightforward: 1) recognize cryptid, 2) Gather information on cryptid along with pertinent environmental and ecological characteristics, 3) Determine a means of obtaining sufficient physical evidence to confirm or refute the existence of a previously unknown biological species" (p. 94).

"Before we can determine whether an account is cryptozoological, we first investigate the possibility that the sighting is a hoax, misidentification, or social fabrication" (p. 94).

"Lets be honest - there is a lot of misinformation, poor speculation, and outright baloney in many books" (p. 106).

"Cryptozoology is concerned with a very small proportion of those unrecognized species - those which have enough salience to be noticed, distinguished, and described by humans prior to scientific discovery" (p. 128).

"Cryptozoology is discovery science, not research science. This seems to confuse both enthusiasts and critics alike" (p. 136).

Arment takes the reader on a search for a number of species in North America. Some, for example the "great naked bear," he describes as probable misidentifications. Others, including the "long-tailed wildcat," he does not discount so readily.

There are a disproportionate number of "cat-like" and "primate-related" cryptids in North America. There are probably some interesting psychological reasons why this is so.

I first became aware of this literature in reference to the "Maui mystery cat" that had state biologists searching for a "black panther," obviously a potential release. However, the "evidence" was surprisingly slim, and the physical evidence in every case did not corroborate with the "ethnoknown" evidence. Why?

I also enjoyed Appendix I in Arments book about the techniques for searching for cryptids. This was a reprint of a 1960s brochure ("Suggestions for the Obtaining of Larger Zoological Specimens for Scientific Study") written by an Ivan T. Sanderson. Mr. Sanderson was very serious about detailing these techniques with the tools at hand at the time, and noted "A Submachine gun is very effect sic especially if it has a short barrel and a large carbine. With it, you can chop down the biggest target and then administer a decent Coupe de Grace" (p. 353). Todays cryptozoologist would be much better off using the techniques found in the book, Restraint and Handling of Wild and Domestic Animals, by Murray E. Fowler.

This is an important book for the serious cryptozoologist.
Arment publishes a truly classic cryptozoological tome.
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :27
Rarely has there been a more critical yet constructive look at cryptozoology, its definition, methodology and direction. Chad Arment has written a most intelligent and noteworthy tome which honestly faces some of the dilemmas that plague cryptozoology and finds means to honestly correct and address them. Comprising two parts, science and speculation, the first part is immensely enlightening.

This book contains sections on building scientific and logical foundations for investigative methodologies, underlays this foundation with an ethnozoological starting point and then discusses the rationale, methodology, feasibility and credibility of cryptozoology.

It is remarkably scientific and yet at the same time eminently readable. Arments logical and intelligent viewpoints are intellectually stimulating.

The second party focuses on speculation, but what speculation this is. He reviews the prospects for animals as diverse as Long-tailed bobcats, the Pennsylvania "gorilla" and the West Virginia Roc.

Also included is Ivan T. Sandersons treatise on Suggestions for the Obtaining of Larger Zoological Specimens for Scientific Study.

I thoroughly recommend Cryptozoology: Science & Speculation as an indispensible part of every cryptozoological and orthodox zoological enthusiasts library and as a most valuable reference source.

The writer of this review is the President and Editor of the British Columbia Scientific Crytozoology Club and its Quarterly.

    Well Done!

All new Bigfoot hunters, (and quite a few present ones) should read this book. It breaks through the barriers of BS and folklore, and explains the scientific method in great detail!
Books like this one will propel Cryptozoology into the mainstream!

This book sits squarely between Loren Coleman and William R. Corliss on my bookshelf. Crypto and anomalous readers will be impressed with this book and should not hesitate to buy it. The effort Chad put into authoring this book will quickly become apparent. The documentation is flawless. You will find new material covering Snakes, Cats, Hominids and Birds. I found the chapter on "Boss Snakes" fascinating! And if you are a fan of Loren Colemans lists in many of his books, the appendices and bibliography in Cryptozoology, Science and Speculation will not disappoint! Also, be sure to check out Chads website http://www.strangeark.com/ , where there is seemingly endless reading material.

I love this movie! Back in the 1970s they would show it on WOR all the time. Why is this movie great? 1)incredibly cheap budget 2)the monster looks nothing like bigfoot 3)wild claims by the teacher that one student was so shocked by her encounter that she can only stare into space at a psych ward (meanwhile she seems fine after said encounter)4) this is really 2 movies grafted together, separated in time by about 18 years 5) one of the teachers on the expedition is act as a know-it-all, appraising ordinary twigs and branches and claiming theyre "prayer-sticks" thousands of years old (yeah,....right) 6) the incredulous classroom laughter when a student jokes that "when a griffin got you, all that was left were your shoes!"I could go on, but if you like inept, if you like Ed Wood-like stuff, youll love this odd gem!

I liked this movie because of its sheer cheap weirdness. It seems to have been filmed at 2 separate times, the 1950s and the 1970s! The bigfoot monster looks more like a moldy rug! Buy this only if you like campy cheesy monster movies! A hoot!

Say what you want about the ever growing mass of bigfoot low budget cheese. I will say that this was a great romp in cheeseland,up to the ankles. A friend of mine manages a cult-world video music store, and we have been for the last 3 years going through every low budget, cult-subversive, exploitation-cheese film weve been able to track down. I found this one on amazon..got him to get a copy for the store, and we both watched this film. First off..we did a bit of research, and we think this film was actually two separate films at one point, and got merged into one..maybe? I mean the bigfoot at the beginning of the film looks like a burn victim in a black blazer? But, then it changes and bigfoot was found in a sarcophagus, in a cave, preserved by some kinda cave gas. But bigfoot wakes up..runs around in an fruit grove, kills a girl in her house, then gets torched alive in the center of town. The end.
Sooo...bigfoot survived the fire, they felt bad..he is always so misunderstood..and so they gave him clothes and a haircut? I couldnt really tell you. But its still great. No point..just hairy pancake face killer..to domesticated pissed off burn victim. Brilliant.

You wanna just have a hoot...give it a watch. But I wouldnt pay more than 5 or 6 bucks for it. Its definitely a cheap date. But hey, bigfoots easy, and the punishment should fit the crime.
    Its so bad its good!

I bought this with the intention of going down memory lane. What a blast. I shut off all the lights and prepared myself for a night of chills. I remember when I was around seven one of the networks aired this on a Saturday afternoon in Queens. I also recall how it scared the crap out of me. Now, all it did was make me chuckle. Its probably the worst of all the bigfoot movies out there but it was long overdue to come out on DVD.

Dont expect a crisp transfer. The quality is only slightly better than a VHS tape and definitely lower in grade than a laserdisc. However, its the best youll ever see of this movie and we should be thankful that the film survived at all. The sound is decent as well.

I think Amazon is overcharging for this DVD which cost me nearly $20 including shipping and NYS tax. Normally, I wouldnt have laid down the cash for a flick such as this, but this movie has sentimental value for me and how can one put a price on that?

I like to see what is on the bookshelfs for youngsters regarding paranormal topics. I loved to read these books as a kid. I was hoping to see some higher quality books by this time, some 30 years later. Im not too impressed. This book is very disappointing. The only plus is the wealth of pictures that are interesting and should capture attention. The authors state these creatures were "investigated". The list of references used is abysmally short. Most of what is given is regurgitated from older books including misconceptions or mistakes just carried over once again. The authors give us the "Who knows?" attitude. We do know some things. We do have evidence. This is not a fair assessment - its a view of what they wish were true. The path here leads only to more mystery, no answers. Sections start with pieces of fantastic fictional "what ifs" and end with a false dichotomy - either this animal does or doenst exist. Those arent the only two options. Misidentification is not addressed well. Im looking for something more balanced, more science- and evidence-based. This is NOT it.

I bought this book for my 10 year old nephew, who, despite all the super electronic gizmos competing for attention at Christmas, took this one up to bed Christmas Eve, and couldnt put it down. Neither could his father, or his 8 year old brother. And I read it before I gave it to him. Very well-researched and balanced with an enquiring approach to the whole subject of Cryptids. Many thanks to the authors for another excellent book that gets kids to unplug from the computer, read a book and get their brains in gear.

The ultimate quest for the worlds most mysterious creatures

The Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman -- these are the names of the elusive beasts that have caught the eye and captured the imaginations of people around the world for centuries. Recently, tales of these "monsters" have been corroborated by an increase in sightings, and out of these legends a new science has been born: cryptozoology -- the study of hidden animals.

Cryptozoology A to Z, the first encyclopedia of its kind, contains nearly two hundred entries, including cryptids (the name given to these unusual beasts), new animal finds, and the explorers and scientists who search for them. Loren Coleman, one of the worlds leading cryptozoologists, teams up with Jerome Clark, editor and author of several encyclopedias, to provide these definitive descriptions and many never-before-published drawings and photographs from eyewitnesses detailed accounts. Full of insights into the methods of these scientists, exciting tales of discovery, and the history and evolution of this field, Cryptozoology A to Z is the most complete reference ever of the newest zoological science.

I have had this book for a while and just recently had to buy another copy because the original one I had was so beat up and well used that it finally fell apart!
Mr. Coleman and Mr. Clark have outdone themselves. The information in this compilation of Cryptids and those that hunt them is exquisite. Though they left out some people and Cryptids the ones they included are well thought out and reserched and give enough info on the others for people to do thier own reserch if they want.
I absolutely loved it and the fact that it is written in an easy to get lexicon is a plus!
I cant wait for the next compilation from these two authors!

Essential Dictionary for Bigfoot, Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
Co-written by long-time cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, this little book is more like a dictionary of cryptozoology than an encyclopedia. For those not in the know, cryptozoology refers to the study of hidden or unidentified animals - the Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch, the Jersey Devil, Alien Big Cats, surviving dinosaurs and that sort of stuff. Whether your into serious research as to the existence of monsters or just interested in folklore and weird phenomena, this book will be right up your alley.

The bulk of this books 250 pages consists of alphabetically organized entries related to cryptozoology, including famous or noteworthy Cryptids (the Minnesota Iceman, Ogopogo, Mokole Mbembe, Thunderbirds, etc), famous cryptozoologists (Bernard Heuvelmans, Ivan Sanderson, Roy Mackal, Richard Ellis, Dao Van Tien, Scott Corrales, etc) and other subjects of note. For example, although well known today, the giant panda receives an entry because it was for mystery to westerners until 1914! Likewise, Vietnams "lost world" where many new species have been discovered also gets mention. Each entry is relatively short and to the point, so those looking for more detailed accounts of particular sightings will have to go elsewhere, but its still a great point of reference.

Of particular note is the amount of information on the more obscure and recent cryptids (or at least, less known to non-cryptozoologists). I mean sure, bigfoot, chupacabras and the Loch Ness monster are well known, but what about Australias bunyip, the Beast of Gevaudan that terrorized 18th century France, or the deadly olgoi-khorkoi? What about the recent discovery of coelacanths in Indonesia? This book includes a sketches and photographs too. Theres a photograph of the mounted shunka warakin, a mystery predator that was shot in the Midwest, as well as the Minnesota iceman, the zuiya-maru carcass and even a pygmy elephant!

The book also includes a very brief definition and history of Cryptozoology, and a very nice time line (matched with the discovery of various animals). Nice, but again most people with an interest in cryptozoology will have some idea of this already. Still, all in all this is a very handy little reference book, especially for those more obscure cryptids that you may hear about or see mentioned online. If you are unfamiliar with the field, then this is a great starting place, especially because there is so much great material that Loren Coleman has written on the subject. So check this book out. Then you too can know all about modern-day mermaid sightings, surviving prehistoric sharks, the emela-ntouka and the giant bird that attacked Marlon Lowe in 1977.

Not enough Creatures - too many creature hunter bios
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :0
For the price its OK - but half the books entries are bios of people involved in creature hunting and there is a huge number of cross-over entries that are Bigfoot-Yeti type creatures just under different names unique to their cultures. So only about 1/3 of the book, at best, is actually unique creatures to read about. The rest is bios and fairly redundant text on similar creatures under different names. Its only because of the affordable price that I gave it 3 stars instead of 2.
A good introduction on the subject
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :1
If youre new to cryptozoology or are looking for a quick reference quide on the subject then this book is ideal. Easy to read, compact and cheap. The book offers brief details about many strange creatures around the world, some that have been recently discovered (coelacanth), some famous (sasquatch)and some that youve likely never heard of before (shunka warakin). Sadly the book, given its small size can only give brief descriptions of these creatures and a good portion of the book is devoted not to cryptid animals but rather to the people that look for them. While these people are interesting I would have preferred to have seen more material concerning actual animals or more information on those the book already mentions.

(Both docs. are now on one DVD) Scott Herriott is in his mid-forties and he believes in Bigfoot. In 1992, he feels he came within 40 feet of one of these beings. There was video involved. Yes, it is in the film.He was interviewed on both A&Es "Ancient Mysteries" and "Sightings" about what happened to him.A couple of years ago he decided to go on mini-expeditions with people hed met over the years who have shown an interest in the phenomenon - believer and skeptic alike. And therein lies the film.Scott visits with: William Dranginis - a man who claims to have had a direct encounter with a Bigfoot. This event inspired him so much that he put together a gizmo-laden motorhome chockful of the latest in electronic surveillance equipment.Mark Thompson - This rich uber-geek joins Scott on an aerial quest in his state-of-the-art helicopter to test out a hypothesis.Ed "The Surf Guru" Marques is an actor and comedian who ventures up to classic Squatch territory with Scott in NW Calif. to visit museums, drink beer and get scared at night by something rustling in the leaves.Plus, Scott and his parents at a remote fire lookout and a visit to the annual Texas Bigfoot Conference (including appearances by Loren Coleman and Dr. John Bindernagel) round out the film. And oodles more.Scott has hosted, reported and produced for the likes of PBS, TechTV, and CNN. He hosted "Internet Tonight" on TechTV where he won a Northern California Emmy for best host of an entertainment program. This seriocomic documentary is a must for anyone who loves wry humor with their Sasquatchery. "Journey Toward Squatchdom" had the late great Sasquatch seeker Rene Dahinden describe it as "the funniest god damn thing on Bigfoot Ive seen." Nick Redfern of Phenomena magazine calls it "monumentally funny". "Journey Toward Squatchdom" goes from onsite inspections in classic Bigfoot country to visits with some of the more fringier Bigfoot seekers. A must for any Squatch enthusiast.

Customer ReviewsVery Smart Docu-comedy worth every penny

I bought this with the foreknowledge that it was more comedy than serious Sasquatch science however the core of the documentary was based on Scotts life changing encounter back in 1992. It was a pleasure to see that he managed to keep an intelligent sense of humor about the whole thing while still presenting present day beliefs of this wild man of the woods. I believe its because he has not devoted every waking hour into proving the creature exists and after seeing those who have, its a good thing. Scott obviously knows natural comedy and how to draw it out of everyday people and A superb job of editing didnt hurt either. This DVD is worth every penny I spent and I agree with previous posts... I hope he does more of this in the future.
Herriott is a "believer" who is both very smart and very funny!!

There are two films on this DVD. One (Squatching) is a very thoughtful and engaging serious look at the bigfoot phenomenon the other (Journey Toward Squatchdom) is a hysterical look into the kinds of people who are obsessed with bigfoot. At times it seems as though Herriott is poking cruel fun at these people, but then you realize that they are all in on the joke. Its a riot.

So, alright, if you really liked "Lawrence of Arabia" and "The Seven Samurai," Im not sure youd relly like Herriotts work. But then again, you just might.
    Hilarious!!!!

This film was hysterically funny. Harriett does search for Bigfoot, in his own way...with a sense of humor.....This is really cute, and yes Scott a check plus is a good thing...LOL....
Best Documentary I have ever seen on Bigfoot , with a silly twist !

This movie is so interesting... With seriousness as well, regarding the mythical creature: Bigfoot. Journey Toward Squatchdom is absolutely great for lots of wild laughter throughout the whole show. I found this documentary so worth every dollar spent, and I really hope Scott Herriott will decide to make very many more...? With alot of the same attributes like this film has.
Possibly with some more investigations into the area of the 1967 Patterson/Gimlin film. I think he could pull it off with ease.

This DVD is great for EVERYONE who enjoys a good laugh! EVEN IF YOU DONT THINK SASQUATCHES REALLY EXISTS !!!
Thank you! Bigfoot will be here all week!

If you are looking for a DVD with credible eye witness acounts of the monster, serious investigations in the hunt for Bigfoot and to expand your knowledge about the elusive creature, then this is NOT the DVD for you. Take a trip down the lighter side in the hunt for the Squatch. You will see the Darrel Owens video of a light coloured bigfoot which is less funny than the rest of the show. A "unique" perspective on the Bigfoot phenomena. A good comedic jouney in the "Hunt"? for Sasquatch.
